Roots deep in a hole

Here I am happily digging a 2ft hole to put in the first of my fence posts when I find that 18in down my way is blocked by a big bundle of roots. I can't get my axe in there because the hole is too narrow.

Any tips on how best to cut through these bighters without making my hole two foot wide?

either use a spade and chop them or a pruning saw.

spade is easier, i sharpened mine for this reason
