Rot?

Apologies for the picture quality as I had to place the camera underneath the carpet.

I recently bought a place and noticed there was a small gap underneath the carpet. Notices one of the floorboards is missing a small chunk and is black around the edge of the void. What kind of rot is this? it almost looks like it's been burnt.
