I’m replacing very old fascia and soffits on our cottage.

Was going OK until we took a front fascia off and found the tilting fillet rotted.

The roof has cement fibre slates, nail and rivet – done 15-20 years ago. My gut feel is the rot’s taken place since (the timber feels dry atm but it’s been really warm here for weeks). The rafters seem OK btw.

What to do…

[1] May pin the new fascia in place until I can get the damage sorted - can’t easily see the tilted fillet from the other side (under eaves)…

[2] I guess the tilting fillet needs to be replaced? Maybe plastic eaves protection would help? Either way can’t see how to do without full strip of slates – is that right?

[3] The root cause needs to be sorted - maybe has to do with rain blowing under the felt but I really don’t know!

Grateful for any comment, cheers.
