Hi Chaps,

I've installing a quadrant shower tray and need to raise the tray off the floor in order to allow clearance foe the wast pipe. The tray has a rounded corner and i want to follow the trays rounded profile on the plat form. I'm planning on making the platform out of a timber frame with 18mm ply to sit the tray on. For the sides i need a wood that'll bend well around the profile. I was thinking of a thin ply but has anybody else got any suggestions?

Cheers

Tom

What about using flexible vinyl baseboard molding instead of trying to bend wood. Vinyl baseboard molding will follow a much smaller radius of curvature than you could ever achieve with wood. You can get the vinyl in 3 and 4 inch width (and wider I think). The molded skirt at the bottom would also serve to cover the cut edge of the flooring you install.

Alternatively, stick a strip of whatever flooring you install to the edge of the platform.

Never heard of that vinyl stuff, but you could use 1.5mm plywood for this. I would put 2 or 3 layers on, pinning and gluing as you go. You will need the same profile at the bottom as at the top to fix to.

Haven't heard of vinyl baseboard molding?

It's all over the place. You just have to notice it.

As shown in this web site, not only does it come in different colours, but it's paintable in case you change your mind:

As shown in this web site, it comes with and without the molded skirt at the bottom because in some cases it's desireable to install the vinyl baseboard molding first, then the carpet. In such cases it's better to not have the molded skirt on the bottom and just tuck the carpet downward at the walls.

To be honest i have never heard of baseboard before but that is definitely what i'm after. I'll have a look at the plywood as well and see what will suit best. Thanks for the help chaps!

If you go to someone like Mr Plastic they do many thin upvc, I've done mine with a thicker upvc moulded skirting board with loads of saw-cuts at the back to allow for bending.

If you want to look at the vinyl baseboard moldings, just phone up any carpet retailer and ask to talk to either their Commercial Sales Manager or their Installations Manager. Tell those guys what you're looking for, and one (if not both) should know who stocks it in your area.

Vinyl baseboard molding is more commonly used in commercial settings, like office buildings and stores, so you might not find it in a hardware store. But, any carpet retailer will also have crews that install carpets in commercial buildings, so they should be familiar with vinyl baseboard molding. You can order it in over 30 different colors, but most places will only stock brown and black.

Seems to me that "baseboard" is what the Americans (and Canadians) call skirting board. I'll check with my american wife when she gets back.
