Routing cables between floors inside stud wall, when stud is on a joist?

I need to run some cables* from a loft space, down via a stud wall to under the floorboards that make up the first floor.

If the stud wall is sitting on top of a joist running in the same direction, how do you route the cables into the stud wall below? I figure the stud wall will likely be wider than the joist, but if its centred on the joist there won't be much room either side for drilling?

*This is for network cables but of the available topics this seemed to be the most relevant - apologies if its in the wrong place
