Hello, hoping someone can advise. We are having the steel beams delivered next week for loft conversion, 201x201x46kg beams. 5.88 meters cut into 3 sections, to be bolted together using steel plates.

The bolts supplied will be Pre-Loaded 10.9 Grade.

Can anyone advise on the Torque settings for these?

Thanks in advance

Thats a good question, but I cant say Ive ever seen a builder with a torque wrench.

Wouldnt you need the bolt diameter as well as tensile grade.

Presume a structural engineer specified the steelwork so ask them to advise on torque settings for the bolts.(y)

Pre-loaded bolts can be supplied with load-indicating washers. They have little dimples on them which close up once the correct torque has been reached. The bolt manufacturer/supplier would know the correct torque if you are using a torque wrench.

(O/T, but it's good to see they are supplying the correct bolts; I've been on a number of jobs where the fabricator has just thrown in a few ordinary 8.8 bolts and the builder - not knowing the difference - complains that the beam bends at the splice).
