I am considering opening up an external wall into an existing single extension.

The RSJ for the opening would be a total of 9 feet in length. This is corner to corner of the house.

The house is old terraced; it’s mostly stone, the wall is load bearing (back wall with gable).

Curious the rough RSJ measurements and strength needed to see the approx costs. The walls are quite thick so assumed 2 would be needed.

For example I checked and a 254x146 43 UB is approx £300; is £600 the high end of what it could cost for the joists alone or could it be more / less?

Thank you

254 x 146 x 43 is massive and ridiculous for a 2.1m opening.

Stone may require something other than a straight-forward couple of beams. Also, the actual loading situation depends more on just "stone walls" - floor, roof, windows, part or point loading are all relevant to what support is required.

Those section sizes you mentioned do appear excessive.

Thank you; as I was not aware I looked at the high end prices just to see if I was looking at £600 for example as a worse case.

If that’s a massive over estimate then that is a good sign so thank you for your replies.

** The opening is corner to corner; above is a solid wall (gable/ roof) and a bedroom. There is another stone wall 3m away inside the house, above this is the door wall to the above room.
