I live in a coastal area where there are a lot of retired people. Over the last month I've noticed quite a few have been cancelling things due to being ill, and some younger ones, and I have myself. It feels like an unusually bad cold and lasts a couple of weeks.

I happened to notice that this is a bad year for RSV. There is a new vaccine being rolled out, but only to pregnant women, and over 75's, as these are the groups most likely to have a undesirable outcome.

The vaccine is fairly new to market, and I would guess NHS has bought 20 million doses (or some such number) and is attempting to save as many lives as possible this winter.

Anybody else think they've had it?

If you're a person eligible for the vaccine, it looks like a good move.

I happened to hear about it while it was in test and development over the last couple of years.

I'm not concerned about what it was. I just felt crap for a few days.

If you're ill enough, you're bedridden and going nowhere.
If you're not that ill, you shouldn't be wasting GPs' time.

So, apart from guessing or wasting the doctor's time, how would anyone know for sure?

I've known several local people cancel important activities for a couple of weeks, and not been fit to get about or go shopping. I'm on a volunteers rota so I've been aware of people dropping out.


There are only a few dozen baby deaths from RSV in UK in a typical year

But many thousands among the elderly.

So worth getting the jab if you're eligible.

Vaccination has only recently been developed, so not much you could do until now.

It's great to see that Ignorant Andy has no understanding of infectious diseases.

They would be less likely to catch an infectious disease if they stayed in their nice warm home on their own. As some can't afford this luxury (because a wealthy Knight of the Realm needs money more than them) they mingle with others in clubs and pubs, nursing a cup of tea for hours just to keep warm, with the added bonus of catching a life threatening illness. During the flu outbreak a few years ago, the Government went all out to protect pensioners by making almost everyone self isolate, this lot seem hell bent on doing away with as many as possible.
