Hi all,

I've cut holes for new sockets in my plasterboard wall which has insulation and plywood board behind it. The image below (the one that isn't of a hole for a socket) shows the bottom of the wall from the eaves side.

NB: I'm having a qualified sparky complete the job. I just need to run the cable for him before a fitted wardrobe goes in which will make access more difficult.

Question 1: Is it ok to drill a hole in the plywood to feed the cables into the space behind so the cable remains accessible?
Question 2: Is it ok to drill holes in the vertical joists behind the wall to run the cable to where it needs to go?

Extra info:
My house is a chalet bungalow and the new sockets are going in the upstairs bedroom in a wall that has the eaves behind it. There's a hatch in the wall for access. I want the cables to be accessible from this space for any future access. Which rules out running them under the floord boards inside the bedroom, but they can be run anywhere in the eaves.

If the joists are structural there are rules for placing notches and holes, otherwise drill through the centre of the joist

No - ask the electrician what he will be happy with before the wardrobe is fitted.

The vertical ones are not joists.

The vertical ones are not joists.

The electrician was round today and asked me to run the cable. I didn't realise at the time what was behind the plasterboard. Thanks for pointing out the vertical ones not being joists. Although it becomes null if I can't get to them if I'm not allowed to feed the cable through the plywood from the other side.

Is that to run cable horizontally?, If so something like this red dot

should be OK, however I don't see a need to do that and I suspect it's not the question.

Drilling/cutting the ply

is also okay but I have to agree that
...ask the electrician what he will be happy with...
is the proper answer.
