my toilet seems to be constantly running! As I am a complete novice to anything DIY would it be simple for me to fix myself or if I got a plumber in would this be expensive?

It is obviously overflowing.
There will be a screw at the top of your float valve about 5 inches from the side of cistern. Screwing it clockwise cuts the water off quicker i.e doesn't fill so high, so adjust the water level to the line in the cistern.
Flush and test until you reach required level :)

u've all got the wrong end of the stick. his toilet is running. he should go and get it back back the scuff of the neck and screw the damn thing down ...stop it running off again

thanks I will try this! oh and by the way ..... I am a she! ;)

if the mentioned doesn't work, its cheaper / easier to get a whole new float valve assembly

Zi, did this happen all of a sudden or did you notice the amount of dripping build up to a trickle then run? If, as you say it is constantly running (now you've boxed it's ears and got it back) is it causing the cistern to overflow ? Have you got a shut off valve or service valve to turn the water off for a while?
The screwy thingy mentioned is easy to get to once you've flushed and before the water causes the ball to rise again, as it presses the thingy when it is high to cause the diaphragm (washer) to shut off the water.

Good luck.

Drip us a line as things progress.
