Rusted bleed valve

Hi all

I've just noticed two of my radiator bleed valves are rusted like so:

One appears to have previously been leaking as an areas of radiator underneath also looks rusted but both valves feel dry currently.

What's the best thing to do? Try and tighten up the valves in case of a leak, or is this something that will need replaced altogether?

Any help appreciated as I'm afraid I'm rather clueless!

There's a rubber O ring sits behind the rad bleed valve when it's screwed in that seals it.

More likely knackered.

older ones rely on sealant, if you turn off both rad valves and unscrew the plug, wind a few turns of PTFE tape round the thread of the plug, that should seal it. Clean off any rust or old sealant from the plug and the hole first.

Otherwise you can buy a new plug and fit that, but again, clean out any rust or sealant from the hole as it may scratch or obstruct the "O" ring or prevent the plug going in smoothly.
