In the summer we moved into our new house which came with an installed loft ladder. The first time I went up it to look in the loft it became unfixed and collapsed with me on it. I broke my arm needing surgery to be fixed up again.

As you can guess I'm pretty concerned about fitting a new one and how safe it will be. I'm a largeish lady (though I wouldn't have thought bigger than a loft ladder should be able to handle). Can anyone offer me any advice as to which one to choose etc??

Hi Charliewatts,

Dificult to recommend a particular make and model as it depends on your particular needs and the clearance in your loft, both vertical and horizontal. You must also take into account the size of your loft opening.

However, what you do need to be safe is a ladder rated to take 150kgs which is, I believe, about 23 stone. I wouldn't go under this rating no matter what. Then it must be secured properly to a joist at the edge of your loft opening.

So, take the measurements as above and google for loft ladders. You'll get page after page of firms offering them.

If you have any other queries , just come back.

Best wishes,

You say a 'new' house, or did you mean that it is not a new hosue but your new house if you know what I mean.

If it's a new house then everything supplied by the builder is subject to 10 year guarantee. They probably didn't fix the ladder properly in the first place. I would contact them get them to fit you a new ladder and think about compensation!

Just to correct the previous post:-

" everything supplied by the builder is subject to 10 year guarantee" - no completely accurate. Providing the building is underwritten by the NHBC, Zurich or other insurance, the structure of the building is covered for 10 years. Generally the internal fixt & fittings are covered for 2 years.

Hope this helps!
