I am going to sandblast some painted/stained oak beams and would like to know what abrasive material to use. I have read that walnut shells are the best option. Does anyone have any experience in this or recommendations? I do not want to use paint stripper (or equivalent) on the beams. And can anyone recommend a small sandblaster to buy (I have access to an air compressor so only need the blaster/gun). Thank you!

Having bought one of the cheapo fifty quid sandblasting kits from ebay to take the paint off a car sill, I can tell you it wouldn't take the skin off a hot rice pudding. Useless bit of kit. You can have it for £20 if you like  .

If the beams are already off, take them to a local professional. If they're still in situ forget it, the dust and mess needs to be seen to be believed.

IMHO sandblasting has to be one of the few jobs I'd pay a pro to do.

Air blasting will clean without damage, doubt any diy kit will be up to the job.

If you do get someone to sandblast it, make sure the slag has not been previously used to strip cars (it will then be contaminated with metal which will stain the oak, and yea I've seen people silly enough to do this).
