Hi,

I have an oak table from Next, a few years old now and the top has been ruined. It's the same one as in this photo, although they have looked after theirs much better than I have.

I want to sand the top down but unsure how to finish it to match the legs. I appreciate it's just a photo, I am hoping it's not stained and instead just lacquer. It has quite a hard shiny surface.

Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Looks like it's just gloss varnished.
Rustins oil based varnish has a mirror finish.
If it's a hot day, thin it with a drop of white spirit.

Thank you. Much appreciated, I will give that a try.

Try on a spare piece of wood to get the hung of it and if you like the finish go ahead.
Sand the table until all existing varnish is opaque.
Try 240 grit first, if too tough go with 120.
Then 240 and finish it with a 400.
Wipe it with a clean cloth and white spirit, then varnish.
Don't worry if first coat is not as smooth.
Leave it to dry for a day, then a light sanding with 400 or even 800 grit, wipe clean and apply the finishing coat for a tough mirror finish.
