I have a unit connected to toilet shower and sink .Has been installed 12 months
.Recently started to try and continue pumping at least 12 times after slightest amount of water used.unit pumps then sound of water running back into unit and then pump action trips in again .
Any ideas before we start messy job of removing tiling in area ???

Either the outlet is blocked & the unit is not emptying properly or the float switch is sticking.Probably the first thing from your description of water flowing back into the unit. Where does it discharge to?

Discharge is through outside wall and along to stench pipe [4" ]at about 16 ft distance .

If the pump is a positive displacement pump then it should be acting as a non return valve when stationary so flow back should not occur. If it does then the material running back after the pump stops will lift the float switch to re-start the pump and the cycle repeats/

It is therefore possible that the pump has become worn due to running dry ( float switch jammed in "pump" position ) or abrasive material has been pumped or the delivery pipe was blocked ( frozen ? ).

Thanks for help sounds pretty terminal to me .Will investigate this weekend and let you know It still pumps solids ok and works ok when shower running but just has annoying tendency to continue trying to pumpafter all flows stopped .this stops when fused spur switched off and then back on again .

It may not be that terminal. We have a sewer pump that ran dry due to a float switch problem and appeared to be terminal on first look. The necessary repair ( DIY ) was to replace the "rubber" stator of the pump, a messy job but less than two hours work.

Thanks for all pointers ,now its down to suck or should I say smell it and see ,. Think I will give my son the job .
