Can anyone help? Intermittent problem now getting worse. Hot water on its own doesn't fire the boiler (no fan noise). Central heating fine. Work around is to turn on the central heating. Then OK, but becoming a real pain. Thanks.

Only a very few engineers will work on your boiler because they leak.

Some jobs like yours takes about 2 hours although the parts are comparatively cheap. If we did it ( which we dont ) then we would replace the whole relevant section which is from memory well less than £100.

The best advice is to have it replaced.

If you cannot, or will not, then try British Gas fixed price repair for about £180 but tey may not cover such an old ( and difficult ) boiler.

Hi,
Thanks for your help and advice.
If this is not an easy repair (something I could do) I reckon its time to change the boiler. I've been recommended a Worcester-Bosch
Greenstar 42CDi. Is this sound advice?
Can't trust Brit Gas fixed price repair. The one time I used them it took 3 x visits from 3 x different engineers, one of which left it in a dangerous state by shorting out the pilot flame detection!

Shorting the pilot flame detection? The thermocouple? How'd he do that then?!

This is one of the few faults on this boiler that is very simple to repair! Will cost you a little less than a hundred pounds for a decent engineer to fix this. Might be enough to get you through the winter. If you wanted such a large boiler you need to make sure you have sufficient flow rate first.

i was just pointing out if he wants a 42kw combi boiler, he should first check the flow rate. Personally I'd repair the SD and recommend replacement for the summer when I'm likely to be quiter :D and I wouldn't be fitting a WB

Thanks for the tips everyone. If I understand correctly, the consensus is that I have a simple diaphram problem on a dodgy boiler. I should have it repaired to get me through winter and change the boiler in summer to something smaller than a 42CDi.

(Property: 4 x beds; 2 x en-suites; 1 x bathroom)

If correct, is anyone willing to do the repair @ the circa £100 quoted?

Well Mick is in Herts and the OP is in Herts and Mick says he can do it for under £100.

The OP needs to contact Mick through his profile.

Thats a job that I would not be wishing to do. As it takes me over 2 hours to change the whole RH block then replacing just the diaphragm will take me longer. I could never compete with prices like that. parking in parts of London are £7 per hour! Local motor garage charges £97 per hour!
