the control box on my scantronic 9450 alarm is very hot on the top surface, not too hot to touch but significantly hot. My wife is concerned that it may burst into flames. I could pull the fuse, to disable the box, but would need to delve inside to disconnect battery. Tomorrow I’ll arrange an engineer, but are my wife’s concerns valid. The system is over 30 yr old but has worked perfectly well in all that time.

The transformer is located at the top, and it will run warm, how hot are we talking?

There could be a failed component on the secondary side thats drawing significantly more current than it should, but I'd expect it'd quite likely not be working right if the secondary was shorted. It could be that the battery is end of life and its constantly charging this because its never getting to the point where it is charged, so is constantly charging. How old is battery?

Battery getting too old and hot?

This happened to my family - had to remove battery immediately.

If it is the battery, you may see cracks in the battery casing, and it will feel like it's 'bulging'.

The battery is at least 10yr old.

Alarm Batteries are usually guaranteed for one year and manufacturers of alarm panels often recommend replacing them after 5 years maximum, I have seen them going to 7 years before failing but not much more.
Yes they can get hot and crack and bulge when old and should be checked at least every 12 months.

the transformer can get hot too but it should have a reasonable amount of ventilation all around the control panel and not be housed in a high ambient temperature environment .
Plastic for control panels instead of metal is not helpful although pretty common these days I`m afraid.

I took the battery out last night and the temperature dropped to warm. I’m going to get a new battery today.
