Screw placement

Hi, I am attempting to fix some screw pops. I have removed the loose plaster and I'm planning to sink the offending screws in slightly further. However I'm at a loss as to whether the new dry wall screws should be either side of the originals in a horizontal or vertical manner. Ie. Will the studs here run vertically? Or horizontally? My guess is horizontal as all these screws are in a line.

For a rooflight in a pitched roof you'd expect a solid timber all around the opening.
