I think he is simply using events to justify his position.

The bit about the Good ol U S of A playing the islamists like a fiddle certainly seems to ring true.

Sunni and Shia are no different to any other differing religious factions - in their case, they hated each other long before oil (and western puppetmasters) came into it. Around 600 A.D. They need little "playing" - people like Hussein and Gadaffi kept a lid on it, if anything.
That said, I do not doubt that those with the real money are not orchestrating whatever they want, to not only maintain the status quo, but to tip the world ever more in their favour.
