I've done a quick seach but all the coving threads I found see quite old. I'm thinking of using some of this stuff in one of our rooms:

http://www.screwfix.com/p/supercove-lightweight-coving-127mm-x-3m-6-pack/3518h?activeTab=rr

It seems to get very good reviews on the Screwfix page!

I see it comes supplied with adhesive but I'm putting it on walls and a ceiling that have already been painted (for a good 10 years) with emulsion. Also, I'm putting it on to hide a self-adhesive border that was peeling, but has left some of its adhesive on the wall. Hopefully, it will span the "sticky" patch as I think it's taller than the border was, but should I prepare the walls in any way? Are there any different adhesives (e.g. No More Nails) that would be better?

I would go with the recommended adhesive, some foam products can react with certain adhesives, as to prep I would sand lightly to key and wipe down with a damp cloth let it dry and off you go.
I have used similar products to the screwfix one, so much better than those horrid polystyrene things from the 70's, hard to tell from plaster if well fitted.

As mentioned by footprints (9's)

Key in any very clean/smooth bonding surfaces.Have a hammer and a few nails to support the cove on uneven wall/ceiling.

Use supercove tube adhesive, also sold by your named shop.
