I have just bought a property and historically there has been an issue of damp on one outside wall and the inside is stained. When I come to decorate and while the wall is back to the plaster is there anything I can add to it to give prevention of possibley any damp coming through later on?. I have checked out the paints you can get but am not that keen. The outside is going to be rendered.

If the water ingress is going to be cured by the rendering then I would use a shellac based paint such as Blockaid or Zinsser BIN over the water stained area. Other oil based stain blockers will suffice but will require longer drying times.

The plaster will need to be dry though, if it is still slightly damp you will need to spend quite a bit more (read a lot more) and purchase Zinsser WaterTite which can be applied over damp paint.
