Next door to my father in laws which is up for sale and unocupied has a severe leak.
He's tried to contact the estate agent who aren't working today. He contacted Severn Trent Water who came out who can't turn it off from outside (maybe cause it'll turn off 3 houses).
Water is now coming in from his kitchen ceiling (he has no water pipes upstairs)
If the estate agents aren't working tomorrow can he contact the police to gain entry and turn off the stopcock?

Don't know, why not go to or phone the local station and ask?

or fire brigade?

Someone needs to turn off the nearest external working stopcock. Whole street if necessary. Then the water board can obtain the warrant to gain entry so that supply can be restored to its other customers.

Break in, you will be doing yourself and the owner a favour! no one in their right mind would bring you to the 'gallows'.

Yea, break a window, but board up afterwards, and turn off stopcock. Tell a neighbour what you are doing, and leave a note. Thatway your honest intentions are bvious. Good luck

Probably against the owners Human Rights to have his empty (for sale) house broken into by anyone. Even someone preventing further damage. ;) ;) ;)

Didn't think Severn Trent would do anything. I reported a leak at one of our neighbours external stopcock about three weeks ago via email. Had a phone call from ST the very next day saying someone had been out to look at it. That's literally what they did :!: :!: Looked at it, but didn't stop it leaking. It has steadily got worse with the cold weather and looked like a skating rink last week. Still at least it's watering the neighbours gardens a treat. ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

in the good old days the owner would be delighted you broke in and sorted the prob for them, and would have rewarded you with a big bottle of something nice, nowadays however i wouldnt do it as someone will advise the owner they could sue you and then they will, contact the police and if they are willing to break in you could offer to assist them turning off the water, other than that leave it, its more bother than its worth for you

TBH i wouldn't give a **** about the consequences, break in, turn off and make the property safe from scumbags, then deny all knowledge.

Just an update

Phoned POLICE they phoned severn trent who couldn't care less. The Police broke in and the place was a total mess (no ceilings & celler flooded) and they managed to divert the leak into the bath (4 stop cocks in the house).

Good news damage tomy father in laws house is at a minimum.

Thanx for all your input

Indeed - who other than Cannae B plant growers would want water on in an empty house in a freeze
