sewer blockage

hi can anyone advise in 2004 we had a 2 storey side and rear extension built, the kitchen is built over the sewers and the water board were fully aware and sent out the machine to put a camera down to check all was ok, 2 additional access points were put in place either side of the building, since then it seems that there is a lip in one part of the sewer under the extension and it keeps causing a blockage, we had to keep getting someone out to rod this, who is at fault and what options do you think i have to get this resolved. thanks

Your drain, your fault.

Get it jetted out and de-scaled then have a cctv done.

hi, thanks for the response, but due to the approval to build by thames water who check before and after and correct building plans would we be liable for this, or builders or buildings insurance?

If the WA checked the drain prior to the build, then that implies that it was all OK at the time, and therefore the problems have occurred subsequently so nothing to do with them. In fact it could be said that your building has caused it

In any case if you are saying that the drain belongs to the WA (ie is a public sewer) then it's up to them to fix it anyway. But they may charge you if your building caused it

However, if it's just a slipped joint and its not actually a problem, just an inconvenience now and again then they might not bother doing anything

Otherwise, check your house insurance

AFAIK it can be repaired with an expandable pipe, saw it on telly last year - they feed it through and expand it, then it hardens.

Far cheaper than digging it all up apparently.

It's called re-lining. Not cheap though.

You would still need it to be jetted out and have a CCTV survey carried out.

If the joint is slipped too much or even still moving, then lining is not an option

If it`s a common sewer serving other houses - you`ll probably find the Water/sewer co. is now responsible as they adopted private sewers across the country last year
