Hello all

We are getting the kitchen ceiling plastered and have taken down the false ceiling.

We were wondering if we should insulate the kitchen ceiling before putting up a new plastered ceiling?

We don't need to and worry about our newly installed electric cabled trapped in insulation as probably 50% of the kitchen ceiling has electric cables running though it? And it's not advisable to have eletrical cables running through insulation or in tight spaces with insulation which undoubtedly would ve the case.

Any advice appreciated

I would say you need to get those connectors changed to maintenance free type and see where the ceiling rose is connected to before you board it. I would not have thought that installing nsulation would help any.

Thanks. We have someone coming to fit a new plasterboard ceiling. I know nothing about DIY.

What is those connectors changed to maintenence free type and what is the ceiling rose ? Thanks

Isn’t that wiring mostly for removed downlighters? If it’s now redundant, you can remove it. (I forget whether there were downlighters in the false ceiling.)

Also, regarding cables in insulation, there are two issues. Firstly, previously you mentioned expanding foam; that would literally entomb the cables hiding them forever, which can’t be a good thing, Secondly, if you have cables under insulation (e.g. glass fibre) that can cause the cables to overheat. However this second issue is not a problem if the cables are carrying only a small current for their size - and lights take only a small current. So generally it is OK for lighting cables to be under insulation.

Where are you proposing to put the insulation? Is it for soundproofing or heat? (Or to absorb smells ?!)
