Should I replace the metal lintel below bricks in fireplace?

Hi all, I've been knocking plaster off my fireplace and have revealed an older much larger opening in behind. The bricks of the old fireplace are supported by a metal strap-like lintel, approx 6mm thick. I want to use the bigger opening, should I replace the metal strap thing or should all still hold up okay? It all seems very firm and no movement, and I had been knocking the crap out of the wall with a small kango all afternoon
