My shower had been leaking for some time, and was concerned. One day, had got out the shower and after 2/3 minutes there was a bang and the tiles surrounding the shower (Redring Super) (quite old, bout 20 yr old)had black stuff streaked down them.
Not only that, it took half the kitchen wall sockets with it, due to bad wiring, so 3 sockets down one side of the kitchen dont work. So, i took the fuse box out from under the stairs, saw that the wire had broke, decided to replace wire to see what happened, turned it back on, and watched the big spectacular :) , took the fuse box out again (30 amp) and discovered that the wire had completely disentegrated! was told that would have to be rewired because most showers now are 8.5 kw+. Going to get new kitchen soon anyway so any thought/comments please...

If it were wired normally the shower fuse blowing would not take any sockets out. This sounds like a DIY nightmare!!!!! :( It is probably worth your while getting a PIR (periodic inspection report) done by a qualified electrician before you have your new kitchen as this should highlight any other abnormalities which require attention.

Make sure that whoever does any electrical work for you is able to self-certify compliance with the Building Regs...
