When plumbing a shower what size fittings do you use for overhead and wall mounted outlets?
I'm assuming half inch male thread, but maybe not?

Usually 1/2” bsp, but also usually what the manufacturer supplies, I would have thought.
Are you talking about the inner wall end of the fitting? As suggested they would usually fit into a 1/2" wall plate elbow, used as an anchor but that would be determined by the male end on the fitting, I have seen 3/4" male outlet ends too.
