may be obvious to some but does anyone know which types of showers are the most cost effective. We're in the process of a replacing our shower and its been suggested that we fit a mixer shower run of the combi boiler rather than our existing electric shower.
Just checking what peoples opinions are? Been quoted £900 for new shower an tray, tiles, new mixer unit plumbed in and a new waste pipe laid under the floor. Struck me as reasonable for all the work but i'm not all that clued up with plumbing.
Cheers

The maxmum gas consumption that you will use is related to your boiler HW output. Say if it was 24kW, then multiply by 1.2 or so (to take into account inefficiency), then you are burning gas at a maximum rate of 28kW.

Say you run the water for a total of 5 mins, then you will use 5/60 X 28.8 kWh of gas = 2.4 kWh. Then multiply this by your unit rate which might be around 4p.

So your shower costs around 10p. In practice you might use less - for example in the summer when the incoming water is warmer the boiler might run at half or it's maximum output. Therefore the shower will burn 5p worth of gas.

Electric showers might be 10kW and combi boilers might be 24kW. So, you can get a more powerful shower from a boiler. At the same flow, a boiler will be cheaper. However, if you use the maximum flow, the more powerful boiler shower will cost about the same as the weaker electric shower.
