Shower tray fitting

I would like some advice on the best method of fitting a stone resin shower tray.

1) Does it need to be bedded on a mortar base, if so how thick?

2) Can I build a small plinth type boxed section for it to sit on so I can get to the waste connection underneath if required?

3) The existing shower has a trap that is absolutely useless, always getting clogged up with the family’s longish hair.

4) Has anyone built a shower yet that is capable of supporting 110 kilos and subjected it to constant daily use by four weighty members of the family, including dropping the soap and shower gel containers.

1) Does not need to be bedded on mortar. (although if directed to by the manufacturer will render the warranty null & void. )

2.) Yes, building a plynth is commonplace.

3.) Sorry, this is always a problem with showers.

4.) I have built a shower that is capable of supporting 110 Kgs, although it was not on a plynth and was bedded down with mortar and has not moved for over 3 years. Instead of accessing from under the shower tray we inserted an access panel in the ceiling below. Cleaning the shower trap couldn't be more simple, if you have a strong enough chair....!!!

All the stone resin trays come with instructions that basically outline your queries. More recently, they are specifying that the mortar has a 'anti-crumbling' agent or plasticiser.

We use the McAlpine shower trap range that is a good build quality and has a top entry cleaning arrangment which is very handy, it saves trying to get under the tray for routine cleaning.

If you do build a wooden base for the tray, remember that marine grade ply is usually specified for the top of your base.
