Just after some advice on a replacement shower tray and best way to install. Fairly novice DIY'er although I have done a bathroom up before but that shower tray was on legs/feet.

I have removed what was a pretty hideous old corner shower and pictures are of what I'm left with. The old tray was just on the floor board, a couple of blobs of cement holding it down and about 10 tubes worth of silicone between it and the wall. They seem to have cut what I'd say was a rather excessive hole to install waste so the tray was actually not supported at all over quite a large area.

My first thought was cut out a section of old floor the size of new tray and replace with some marine plywood to install the tray onto. Then tile backer board over rest of floor and tile up to tray. I'm wondering if there is an easier way though? I wondered about putting ply over whole room but thought maybe better to try and lower shower tray area to get a lower profile finish?

Would really welcome any thoughts from someone a bit more experienced in these things. I know I could call in a pro but I really enjoy taking on a project and think I can manage it ok just need a bit of a pointer on how best to approach.

Thanks in advance!
