Shower / Vaillant VCW GB 242 EH / VCW GB 282 EH Combi Boiler

When I try to mix the hot / cold water in my shower it is either too hot or too cold. The British Gas engineer recommended a new boiler. Is there a cheaper option ? I assume the problem is due to the change in water pressures but I'm a complete diy novice. Any suggestions ?
