The two walls forming the corner into which I am installing a shower are lath-and-plaster on stud.

What should I (would you) put between the painted plaster and the tile adhesive ?

a) Nothing ?
b) apply that special water-proof membrane, with cement-based adhesive?
c) hack off both laths and plaster, and replace with HardyBacker ?

I think b) would be the easiest / quickest / least messy - but would it be sufficient?

no easy out here. had exactly the same situation. i didn't trust my 100 year old lath and plaster to hold up my travertine. I screwed waterproof plasterboard onto the existing studs. then tiled on top of that. had to put a double bead edging around the shower but it looks ok.

I would strip the lath and plaster off the area where the shower is going and put Hardy backer board on and tape all the joints and fixings with the appropriate tanking kit and tile on that, Moisture proof plaster board is not water proof and should not be tiled on in "wet areas" like showers ;)
