I was going to change the said part in the title, for my shower as it is looking a tad tired. As I understand it, it should just un screw ready for fitting a new one. When I try to unscrew it, it just turns and turns, with the thread pipe into it. Why would this be, could it be into push fit plumbing behind the tiles/stud wall, hence just spinning in the push fit that I cannot get at without removing tiles etc?

With my shower the chrome piece your're looking at just unclips from the wall plate after unscrewing the hose from the union. If I understand you correctly you have been turning the whole assembly which may have disturbed the joint in the wall. Did you try removing the hose and seeing if the cover just lifts/twists off without turning the whole thing? Needs to be pulled out at the top first then down over the union if that makes sense?

Of course your assembly may not be the same.

It may be a type of pushfit which has to have a cap unscrewed, to come apart. Who knows what's in there, unless you can track down the same model of wall outlet.
It looks like you'd have to break the plastic chrome part to see, then things could get difficult if the part you need to reach is behind the tiles.
