Hi guys, I am installing a stone base shower in my bathroom at the moment. But where the waste hole is, directly underneath is a beam for the floor. The shower is rather large and will look silly raised so is there any solutions to get around this? Also the waste pipe then needs to travel through the next beam to reach the bathroom drain point.

I was looking for if there was a shallow low profile 'frying pan' shaped device that could be placed under the waste hole as usual and only have to notch out the wood the depth of the that component?

Anyone have any suggestions? I have access to a vucuum former and laser cutter, could i make something?

many thanks

Try a shallow trap for the shower and see if that helps.

Not a fan out of notching joists.

I was looking at them yes they are a possibility! but i have had an idea....<br>
due to standards, the joists can only be notched 1/4 of their original depth. in my case this would be 45mm, this means that the pipe can travel through the joists it has to (only 2) in line with building regs. Now to resolve the problem of the trap taking too much space from the joist...If i use a straight 90 degree bend from the shower drain (40mm diameter) to get it away from the joist, this will hopefully be no deeper than 48-49 mm which is just past building regs. Then the trap can be situated the gap between the next joists. And for peace of mind of the 3-4 mm over the building regs, i could reinforce the beams perperdicular to the other beans that have not been notched.

What do you guys think of this?

thanks

Sorry that's wrong. You cannot notch 1/4 of the joist depth. You can drill 1/4 depth on the centre line of the joist, but you can only notch 1/8.
Will there be room to reinforce the joist with a new length alongside?

Ahh i see, thanks for the correction! I presume there will be space to reinforce, do you mean the section below the bit that has been notched out? Can that just be reinforced with 2x4 for example?

thanks

I really meant using timber of the same depth as the joist, but if the waste overhangs both sides then this would be impractical. There will be a way round this, but probably best to post in the 'building' forum if contemplating structural alterations. You also need to bear in mind how you will clear the trap if it gets blocked.

Have you considered turning the tray around, or finding a different one?

I see your point, the tray is a stone quadrant so cannot be rotated, and have had the tray too long to return it. I know there must be a way, i have been thinking about sitting the tray on a sheet of wood, raising it just the minimal height, but enough to meet the 1/8 of the depth of the beam notching regulations?
Does the notching matter how far along a joist from each fixed point? i mean does that regulation of 1/8th of the depth only apply to a certain distance from any support point?
