I have a common fault with my Escort van, the side lights don't work from the stalk anymore, but the headlights do..

so I fitted a switch for the sidelights that is seperate to the stalk.. is this allowed for the MOT?

it has a switch and the lights work but it's not exactly "standard"..

AFAIK

You may have to point it out to the next MOT examiner though, otherwsie they will fail it for not working.

As long as they can be switched on/off and work that is fine.

It's probably the control relay that is knackered (switches the lights to side if you turn engine off with headlights on)

no it's deffinitely the twist switch on the stalk..
already replaced the stalk once from a scrappy and it worked fine for a few years..

it tends to be worse after the summer since the lights don't get used much untill I have to drive to work in the dark and such...

My reversing light switch in the gearbox once died on an old Metro I had.

So I replaced it with a toggle switch taped to the gear lever.

Worked well & passed an MOT.

Side lights as a rule are not put through the relay so would suggest the stalk.

From what I remember, the lights can be individually switched which is legal but as a previous response has suggested, you need to make the tester aware.

Not a good idea to buy used switch gear as invariably they have had the same life as the one you are replacing.

Reverse lights are not part of the MOT.
