Silver / Grey conductor ?

Having repositioned my CU (yes I know its notifiable) I need to extend a couple of cables to reach the new position. The cable to the immersion heater has silver grey stranded conductors. Is this copper, is it steel, is it aluminium....how would I know and what difference does it make ?

It is tinned copper - old imperial stuff.
