Sime Boiler heating water but radiators only sometimes

Sime combi boiler. Timer set for radiators to come on morning and night. Radiators sometimes heat in the evening in response to the timer but not every time. Have tried overriding the timer to get the heating on and it does not work. Can anyone shed any light on this? Have checked the FAQs and answer to similar problem didn't seem to apply to our boiler.
