Some one Please Help my boiler is doing my head in. Every now and then theres this i wouldn't say it was a humming sound, but something like it coming from the boiler. I've done alsorts from turning the power off to bleeding the raditators but nothing works, it seems that the noise only appears when its been quite hot outside.

At the moment its switched on summer mode i think.

I've looked at the instructions and they say that if i want to turn it off for a short period of time i have to isolate the D.H.W inlet value by rotating a lever, but having a look at the boiler i can't find a lever to rotate where the diagram shows it should be.

I am losing sleep because when this noise appears at night its so loud i can't get any sleep.

Anyone help?

Thanks

sorry you are losing sleep, but all our plumbing heating boys are in the land of nod, hopefully you will get some replies by early evening,

they will also want a bit more info, here are a few general questions that the answers to do help

Just in case you didn't realise D.H.W stands for Domestic Hot Water. If you trace the pipe, that feeds the hot water to your hot water taps. Where it meets the boiler you will find a stopcock. This would be the DHW outlet.

The DHW inlet would be the pipe that is connected to the cold water mains. This should have a similar stopcock.

I'd hazard a guess that the noise is the fan, but the plumbers will probably have more info.

Cheers guys, i'll have a look in the morning, well when the rest of the house get up that is.

That would be my first guess. I have had buzzing gas valve solenoids on a number of simes. Pull the front cover from the bottom and lift it off to try and get a closer listen. DON'T STICK YOUR FINGERS INSIDE WITH THE ELECTRICITY ON!!

Hi i got some sleep last night, got my fiance and a mate to look at it, neither are plumbers but i phoned my uncle who was one and he said it sounded like the fan to him too, so them too took the fan bit to bits and gave it a good damn clean. Don't worry the elec and gas got turned off.

The bit that has the bearing on the fan casing was mega stiff so wasn't turning at the right speed, hence the horrid humming/screeching noise every now and then. A good clean up and a bit of 'Super Maintainence Spray'(WD40) and it works a treat now.

I just want to to say thanks guys for helping, would have gone spare if i hadn't found this site and so many friendly people with advice.

Thanks

u are so lucky the corgi lads didnt read this or they would have blasted you or did they hmmm seem you took the case off a boiler and not one of them said FOUL i bet some will now i am imagineing this is a positive pressure boiler ( worste case scenario) now you have to get this checked out for your own safety dontcha

how did this one slip the WRATH of the corgi reg fitters

we all have to sleep slogger even the corgi lads
condition of registration must be bright eyed and bushy tailed for first job of the day

Leaving aside CORGI issues -
Putting WD40 or similar on a fan is virtually certain to be a complete waste of time. OK - it'll quieten the fan for a while until it evaporates then you'll be back where you started. Unfortunately, boiler fans carry HOT exhaust from the boiler and (perhaps) have rather cheap-and-nasty bearings. They are lubed for life and when they get noisy are useless scrap. Even more unfortunately, it seems there's no worthwhile business case for reconditioning fans with new motors
