Hi,

I am not super confident at DIY, mostly in terms of not knowing the "best approach" to achieve what I want... however when I do know, I am perfectly capable of executing it :)

Having said that, all I need to do is fix a batten of wood (25x25x2000mm) to a window recess and I'm unsure of the correct approach...
  • Is it required to drill holes, plug them, and then drive screws all the way through the batten?
  • Are there screws available that will just drive through the batten and straight into the wall, if so, what are they called and can someone link me to them?
  • Do I need a drill of a specific specification to drive straight into brickwork? I only have a 18v Cordless Combi at present which is perfectly good for 99% of things I do, struggles a bit with lintels though!
  • Could no more nails it, but would like to at least try to do it right first ;)
Thanks for any guidance offered,

Cheers!

Question should read ''HOW DO I FIX TO A LINTEL" since I assume that's what you are attempting?

You need a SDs drill to ensure easy drilling of lintel, if not available you can glue baton to wall but depends how sound ,flat and level the wall. I would not attempt plug-less fixing into a lintel.
Variety of adhesives to choose from which includes fixing foam, CT1, Gripfill etc etc.
If you can drill then plug and screw with at least a 80mm screw length.

Hi, thanks for the reply. No it's more of a general question, not specifically about lintels, i have recently drilled into lintels, but it was time consuming and a struggle - sorry for the confusion.

The question does remain though, what is the preferred method of attaching a batten to a wall directly.. lets assume that we are doing some box work perhaps? I guess it's either drill, plug and line up the screws... or just get some magical fixing that goes straight through??

Probably will get a SDS drill for next time (or just borrow one) in any case as it will save a lot of swearing ;)
