Hello. I am an 18 year old student and have just moved from my parents house to a flat.

I am a total stranger to gas central heating as we had electric at home. two easy questions I have are about temperature control.

1) There is a small box on my living room wall with a slid that goes from 5 degrees celcius to 30 degrees. It is currently on 27.5, is this normal? should it be lower?

2) In the airing cupboard the water temperature on the hot water boiler is 55 degrees (it goes from 50-90) is this too hot?

The water is fairly hot and when I tried turning it down I had no hot water.

many thanks

Joe

The correct setting for the wall stat is 21°C although if you are impecunious then put on a pullover and set it at 18°C.

The hot water should be set at 55°C although the calibration on those stats can be some way out.

What are you studying?

would it matter if it was above 25 degrees?

When I put it below and the boiler timer came on I had no hot water. Would I have to wait and is it the higher the temperature the higher the gas bill?

The setting on the room stat is VERY dependant of the location of the sensor. The best way to use it is to turn it up until the room is at a comfortable temperature. (I think you should wait until about October).

You can tell what the room thermostat thinks the temp is in the room at the moment by listening for the clicks as you turn it up and down, there should be only a few degrees hysteresis.

The cylinder stat will have enormous hysteresis though. It also needs to be well clamped to the tank or it won't work at all!
