Mind your own business, how often I perform. ;) I could have said several times a night but didn't want to generate any hate mail. ;)

But gig once a week and rehearse twice a week, 3 different bands, but only during the winter.

I Play Bass and drums and used to do the working mens circuit yrs ago. Also played in a Beatles Tribute band.

Still in touch with other musos but the work is very few and far between with venues closing down due to smoking ban and general downturn.

The greedy Breweries have a lot to do with the downturn in trade with them squeezing every last drop of revenue out of their landlords!

Whats the difference between a radox footspa and a drummer?
Radox bucks up the feet.

What's the difference between a band leader and a baby?
A baby sucks his fingers.

How can you tell when the trombone player is playing too loud?
You can see his slide moving.

How do you know there's a singer at the door?
They can't find the right key and they don't know when to come in.

How do you know when there's a drummer at the door?
The knocking gets faster and it's too loud.

I play keyboards and guitar. Have done both semi pro, but as Bahco says, pubs and clubs are closing down, work in this field is now very slow.
I think also the amount of karaoke disco's going about, where Joe Public can get up and do a turn is another nail in the coffin of live entertainment. ;) ;)

yeah I agree john and Bahco, and also the advent of midi files started to kill off the club live music scene too
I have played the clubs too, many yrs ago but only the pub for me now
still, I enjoy playing and I've been lucky and blessed to have played with some truly great players both amateur and profesional (and still do)
I have had some great jamming sessions too

Ps Bahco used to know loadsa beatles tunes gonna have to relearn some, they did some great stuff

Play guitar myself , every day if possible...takes the edge off my rage. :)
There are quite a few pubs around my neck of the woods still putting bands on , money is poor but if you want to get out there and play then you can.http://nwb.co/gigguide this site shows what bands are playing , where , and even what the setlist is.

Matt1e, I'm not entirely sure about the advent of midi files. I have recorded tracks to midi files and have done stuff that would be impossible for one person to play on a keyboard on his own. Plus you can re-do songs to such an extent, I did a great backing track for Love Love Me Do in A reggae timing. (think The Beatles meet UB40 ).
One thing that is calling the death knell, though is , and has been for a long time is the need for the PRS license.
I used to have to fill one of these in on a yearly basis.
I could spend hours in the reference section of the local library going through books to determine who wrote the song, who owned the license. Stupid questions like " How many times a year do you intend to perform this song?"
A bit like how long is a piece of string!
Send the completed form off and a few weeks later they'd send a bill for expected royalties (to go to the original artistes no doubt) Yeah Right. ;) ;)

PRS? Never knew what that was till I googled it just now... and I've only ever played in covers bands! Apparently they even have a policy for Police stations! Why would a police station need live music?!

I do very occasional gigs but jam with friends more often. Bass-player usually, but we always swap about when we hit a block or just fancy playing a different instrument.

When on my own at home, I play organ mostly because it's just there in the house and it sounds "full" without any accompaniment.

Hi john, dont get me wrong I think midi files are great too, hell you can even use them to controll your lighting rig and effects too!
like yourself one of my mates records and uses midifiles on stage too (he still uses and swears by cakewalk 3) but he's a great musician and he is the one thats playing, he also provides his midifiles to other "artistes" who can only pretend to play and if it wasn't for the fact that they can afford to buy the gear would never be singers if they had to audition for a band
midi files used as a tool for musicians, yeah im all for
paying to see a club band who use midi files because they're hopeless i'm against
