Hi all, wonder if anyone could help before I have to call an electrician.
Today I brought a new TV, I removed the old tv and connected the new one, however, there was now no power coming from the socket that powered the old tv. I checked the consumer unit and nothing had been tripped, I checked all other sockets and they were all working.
I removed the socket facia and tested the cables with a multi meter and there is no power going to the socket.

I find this really strange as I was watching the old TV minutes before I connected the new one? If anyone could help or give advice I would be very grateful.
TIA

The socket will probably have been a spur from another socket. In all likelihood it will have been the nearest or most convenient. Loosen the faceplate on that socket and check the third cable running from it.

Opps - it was fitted by an electrician about 10 years ago when we had an extension done (high socket for wall mounted tv), the cable runs into the garage from the living room (bungalow) then up into the attic via trunking.

CBW - No, not to my knowledge.

He may well have fused it in the attic (although fusing it in the garage would have been more sensible).

Can you confirm that the twin and earth used was 2.5mm? Given that it was only intended to supply a TV he may have used a thinner cable and used a lower rated fuse. If that is the case, then he would have fused it at the point where it leaves the ring (presumably the loft if the bungalow hass concrete floors).

BTW- I am not an electrician

Thanks for that, I’m away until Monday morning but I will trace the cable in the attic when I get back, I just find it really strange that I was watching the old TV on this socket just 10 mins before I plugged the new TV in……..

What was the measured voltage line to neutral ,and line to earth ? And neutral to earth ?
You’ve lost me there Terry, sorry. I initially tested the cables with a voltage detector pen then the voltage with a multi meter, both showed no voltage.

Agreed, simply unplugging something shouldn't cause a loss of power, that is part of the reason that I think that there may be a 3 or 5 amp fused spur unit somethere

I’ll certainly check that, thanks for your help

For instance ,With your meter set to AC voltage range ,and one probe touching the live ( line) conductor the other probe touching the neutral conductor would give you a voltage measurement. Is this how you carried out your testing ?
I am trying to establish if the supply is an issue ,which as others have suggested it probably is, and not the switch.

It is possible it is connected to the lighting circuit Are the lights working?
