Skirting board on stairs

Hi,

I'm renovating a small house and have added insulation to all the walls for soundproofing and better thermal performance. The stair wall now sticks out as much as the existing skirting board (when I plasterboarded it I profiled it to the skirting). It looks like this - any idea of how best to neatly fit new skirting?

End the skirting short of step.

I guess that you could add a fake stair string that will stick out as much as the new skirting. I assume that you need to add skirting...
