My mum is with Sky and has the Netgear DG834GT router from Sky.

Recently, when she switches on her computer, she's getting two messages:

IP address is not recognised

and

IP address conflicting with other network

She's having a nightmare trying to get internet access though she does get it eventually. Strangely, it seems to be at the weekend the problem is worse because when she switched on this morning, there was no problem

Does anyone know what could be wrong? She's convinced that somebody else is using her broadband connection.

I've tried searching for the error messages and best I've come up with is to remove Sky's firmware from the router - but would that cause problems with Sky?

I'd be grateful for any advice.

Hmm could be a few things.

In order to troubleshoot it would be best if you goto the command prompt.

Click Start
Select Run
type cmd

Then type ipconfig /all

paste that back here, i or someone else can check your settings are correct.

Alternatively login to your router , normally your gateway ip displayed from ipconifg so in internet explorer you would type http://<gatewayip>
Something like http://192.168.0.1 this will prompt you for user/password.

Within here check WPA/WEP is enabled for your wireless security settings, preferably WPA. Also goto monitor/status for DHCP and check connected clients. You should see just one connection there, ie your machine/laptop!

BEst of luck.

I would also try the following commands

ipconfig /release

and then

ipconfig /renew

This will essentially release your IP address and then request a new one from DHCP via your router.

alternatively your router sounds a bit screwed, there should be a reset button on the side of the device. Resetting the device will allow the default settings to occur.
