Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this but i have a satelite tv question.

The social club that i run is having a few financial problems and cant afford sky sports through sky as it cost us nearly £1000 a month.

Does anybody know of a legal sports broadcast via satelite that would cost us less money?

If so, what equipment would i need and how much would it cost? And how would i go about getting someone to install it for me?

Any help or information at all would be much appreciated.

Regards.

Setanta was, I think, the last legal alternative to Sky other than football coverage on the regular BBC & ITV channels. As you know, Setanta is no more.

I believe that Sky has some exclusive rights(?) to broadcast football in the UK as part of their sponsorship of the League. That means that if it doesn't come via BBC/ITV or another carrier that is porting Sky's coverage then it is an illegal broadcast. There were pubs using the Norwegian broadcasts a few years ago until Sky got heavy and threatened legal action.

why not phone them tell them your leaving as its to expensive as you only have a few watching your loosing hundreds a week and see what they say

if you dont get any joy ask for "the retention team"
iff your getting no where ask the retention team to connect you to the termination team :D ;)

Why on earth is it this expensive, it cost me £37 a month for sky world.

Are they like caculating it on an average per head that will watch it then giving a discounted rate? like 30 times 37 per month is like £1100.

What an utter rip off.

no its worked out on square footage of the pub in question, we didn't have sky sports at our pub as it was over £5k a year, we had Setanta at £12 a month.

ESPN took over the old Setanta so get onto them for a cost effective deal.

Latest quote is over 900 quid.

Its worked out by rateable value, which is rather unfair.

IMO it should be done on turnover not rateable value.

We have a large club but also a large car park and rear garden. We struggle at times with numbers who drink in the club and lose buisiness due to the pub around the corner having Sky.

which is worked out on potential earnings on square footage!!

my old pub's business rates were unreal as well, over £650 a month on a turnover profit of 4,000 before wages. i tried to get it lowered but they used every delaying tactic in the book and we had shut up shop before they ever reached a decision!

I know of two options both "grey" That a landlord i know whom has just got rid of sky for the same reason.

get someone to fit multi room then fit the said box into the pub paying the lesser amount and take the risk you don't get fined. If you do stilll cheaper than proper pub SKY.

Get a satellite the receives foreign broadcasts and take the risk again???

about a £1500 fine so if you get fined evey 2 months he is quids in

Sky italia will be the best option for you. This will give you all the live games shown on sky, plus you get all the 3 pm kick off games. It should cost you around £1400 for a year. For this you get the sky italia box, installation and a 12 month pre paid cad. It's no good for anyone other than a pub or club.

Have a look on the net and shop around for the best deal. This is a legal system Sky don't like it but there is nothing they can do about it

We have it at our Golf club and it's great. Installed it in Feb and it's paid for itself, the place is full for every game

Hope this helps

If you think of fitting a 'Grey' box have a look at the European Court case on at the moment. Bought by a Pub Landlord who was prosecuted. She has a good case which if won will allow 'Grey' boxes. English commentary from a source in Greece. Google Nova TV

Unfortunately, card sharing is not an option for a social club as mentioned by the original poster, they run the risk of breaching those same constraints that you mention above.

It is for a couple I know :)

A multi-sat dish is the best option, as suggested, but illegal, due to broadcasting rights. But a recent Windows 7 advert blew several legal precedents out of the water. The advert goes, "If I want to watch something from the Uk, abroad, then I can stream it from my home PC, to my laptop",

The ASA haven't had complaints regarding this, as far as I know, as the ad is still running.

So logic dictates, that if someone abroad is running the coverage of a match, and it is streamed to the UK, even in a public environment, then that would be legal?

Most of the top 6 teams are covered on a weekly basis, but there is a time delay, and streaming issues, especially when the chat forum goes "GOAL" 100 people at the same time, so pictures can be juddery...and the commentary is foreign..better than nothing?

I use it now and then, but on a big screen in a pub, might not be so nice to stream?
