I have a nice piece of thick slate that i would like to cut 3 or 4 tea light holder circles into to create a centre piece. Any ideas of how I should do this? (I will need to purchase the cutting/drilling items)

you want a bottoming drill.. drills blind holes with a flat bottom..
but they're expensive, 35mm one is about $180... ( quick google.. )

might be better with a drill press, some clamps and a few different sizes of core drill then a small chisel to knock out the "rings"..

When on holiday in Wales I saw some similar things. The hole was done with a core drill (no pilot) and the bit left in the middle was snapped out to leave a smooth hole with riven bottom.

I would think a diamond coredrill held in a drill press would be the best option.

Being fairly soft, id think one of the cheap carbide edged holesaws would be plenty adequate. Drill to a depth and carefully snap out the core. ;)

The piece of slate is about 2 inches thick

Thanks for the responses. Will give it a go, fingers crossed

done it on sandstone paving with a simple hole saw for doing holes for washing lines. knackers the hole saw but theyre cheap. If its slate then it should be fairly soft.

Might be cheaper & have a better finish to just order one from a touristy shop in Wales :D
