Another pub debate......

Are there any pieces of music written for the slide whistle, or were they invented purely to denote the gaining or losing of an erection in the background music in Carry-On films ???

There is one rare but very important piece written for the slide whistle. Currently the score is preserved in the british museum and the writer thought to have been of celtic origin is now unknown.

Apparently it was used as an aid to ancient fertility druidic rituals and was known as "the john Thomas song".

I think the carry on films got the idea from this peice not the other way round. the director was Oxbridge educated and had a classics degree with a specialism in ancient mythology and celtic song

George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" is written with a clarinet as the main instrument (a clarinet can actually play slides too!)

I suppose you could play that on a slide whistle

And what about trombone music? And there is plenty of music with slides for fretless string instruments too.

But, I would say that the Carry On use of the instrument is by far the most prevalent ;)

Having just checked on Wikipedia (as I didn't want to expose myself to ridicule by asking on here whether Pickles' post was true or not :D ) I feel duty bound to apologise for failing to mention that it is also used for the Clangers. But mostly erections. ;)

I have done a little more research. Typically the victim of sacrifice would be brought to the alter and a beautiful virgin (naked) shown to him. Roughly from the ancient druidic a translation of her symbolic name is “corlookatthebellsonthat”. This term has carried over into modern usage and is frequently heard on building sites and such like The sacrificee would instantly acheive erection symbolised by the up tone on the slide whistle. He would then immediately recall that he was about to be slaughtered and promptly loose it again hence the down tone

in ancient Rome similar rituals were common, see for example Frankie Howards Masterful historic portrayal in “Up Pompei”

Yes. I have heard of Paul 'Hezzy' Trietch (might be 'Hezzie'). I think he was a jazz musician of some kind (the Hoosier Hot Shots I think). I used to play in a swing jazz band - that's how I know such rubbish.

Also in classical music:

Ravel: L'enfant et les sortilèges

Luciano Berio: Passaggio

It's a woodwind instrument and my wife teaches woodwind, so she knows!

IMHO this thread is not being treated with the silliness it deserved
