Hello all

Quick question, does anyone have a sliding contemporary roof lantern?
Looking to get a few quotes but only found 2 company's on Google who make them...

1x1.5M size

We got quotes from duplus for that type but they said they let in exactly the same amount of light as a flat one, but cost more, so we went for the flat which was much cheaper. They added some kind of anti dirt coating for free.

Ahhh ok, it's a hard one to call isn't it, are you happy with the flat one? What were the quotes like? Got £3400 so far... :cautious:

ouch!! we went for the 750x750 in the end, it was only 800+vat I think. Flat one is fine, it's up there somewhere, I don't really look at it as it's mostly to let light in (nearly 5m above the upstairs landing floor) Ours doesn't open either.

I know it's very Tracy Island, but my experience of these from the regular marketing stuff that gets sent out from the to companies, is that they are over priced nonsense, architecturally pointless, and inelegant in use when open.

But your heat seeking missile will make a big hole in it if it doesn't slide

The unit is going in a kitchen, i have spoken to 4 people with roof lanterns, 2 with blue tint and they all said the rooms below get very hot in summer, especially in a kitchen. So for these reasons i want an opening roof lantern. Better to not need it and have it rather than not have it and need it...

The heat will be from the solar gain rather than the lack of opening. If you can put a blind to reflect the heat in summer, it'll be better. Office buildings etc almost always have external blinds for that reason.
We have a 4.8m by 2.4m glass facade, but the heat gain is very low in summer due to shading by the house.
There's a tool to calculate the best size and position of shading to get the heat in winter but not summer.

Just to update this for anyone who is looking for a sliding roof lantern, we went with a roofmaker one in the end, was very pleased with it, use it all the time! Takes a little while to open but it has a limit switch so you can leave it to open, and it has a rain sensor so it closes itself also should/when it rains...
