Sludge, black iron oxide

I believe (according to this Plumber) that the return pipe on five of my radators is clogged solid with this sludge.

Is there anyway I can clear those pipes, without having to resort to replacing the pipes?

Try some system cleaner for a couple of weeks., or take the radiators off, flush each, and then use the system cleaner. This may loosen the stuff in the pipes that you can then flush out.
