Hi all,

I'm attempting to lay my first patio at the moment and want to build a small wall (about 2 feet high) around 3/4 of the patio area.
I've never tried to build a wall before and was after some advice as to how to go about it. I've searched the internet for advice on marking out etc and it seems to make sence but I would like to know if anyone has any nuggets of advice for me.

Any help (no matter how small) will be much a appreciated.

Thanks

J

lay the patio slabs first, then build the wall. this will give you an easy outline to follow for the foundations. make sure you solid bed the slabs though.

a single brick, 600mm high wall will only require a foundation a little wider than the shovel. digging down 18- 24" should be more than enough.

mix the concrete at 6 parts ballast to 1 cement.

no need for a dpc.

it may be wise to have some drainage ports in the wall if the patio slopes towards the wall or is trapped in by the wall in any way. using off cuts of square gutter down pipe is ideal as the down pipe is the same size as a metric brick.

should the garden be higher than the wall, you may need to consider a drain gulley.
